There continue to be fewer and fewer areas of life that zombies haven’t chewed through hungrily as they infect pop culture more each day. If you’ve been debating about going back to school, we’re willing to bet two things. First, you didn’t think about taking on a major that required classes about zombies. Second, you’re truly tempted by the idea.
Before we go any further, let us be clear that this FREE college course won’t actually earn you college credit – it’s just for fun. With that said, AMC (the network behind the show The Walking Dead) has partnered with the University of California Irvine and educational tech company Instructure to offer a massive open online course to “examine scholarly topics through the lens of The Walking Dead.” Translation: you get to study zombies in an educational way.
The course, which begins Monday, October 14, is expected to be one of the largest online courses in history. Each class will use plot points from episodes of the show and cover topics like the science of hope, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, and the role of public health in a pandemic. The teachers will all be from UC Irvine, coming from backgrounds of physics, public health, and social studies. Other schools have mixed pop culture and academics before (many offer philosophy classes with emphasis on Star Trek), but now you can add zombies to the list.
