July 4 may only be one day, but the whole week is going to involve fun times for everyone. The fun will start on Monday July 1 for anyone heading to Downtown Indy for the evening. If so, make sure to head just a couple of blocks north of Monument Circle to enjoy the World’s Largest Shriners Parade. Watching is FREE, and you can capture the spirit of Independence Day a few days early.
Each year, the Shriners hold a large parade in the city of the annual Imperial Session (or business meeting) to thank the residents of the city. For all of you Cheapsters, that means an opportunity to enjoy a FREE parade. The celebration kicks off at 8:30 p.m. and will end by 11:00 p.m. on Monday. (You read that right — it’s a night watch.) The parade begins at Pennsylvania and North Streets and ends at Meridian and Walnut Streets. You can click here to view and download the parade map.
The Shriners began years ago as a segment of the Masons. A particularly fun-loving group of men talked frequently of starting a new fraternity for the Masons that was centered more on fun and fellowship than on ritual. The group founded the Shriners, and the fraternity continues today. Shriners International has nearly 200 chapters in seven countries and is open to men of integrity from any stage of life.
