On your average week, the only common element among our Top Five Cheap and/or FREE things to do over the weekend in Indy list is the ability to save money on your weekend entertainment. Beyond that, we generally find a wide range of opportunities on the cheap. This weekend isn’t a disappointing one, but the opportunities do have one other factor in common – the great outdoors.
All five of this weekend’s Top Five take place at least partially outdoors, and it’s hard to complain about that. The outdoors are particular inviting this weekend with high temperatures in the 70s. The only gripe most Cheapsters have about the outdoors right now is the pollen, so make sure you grab your allergy medicine before checking out everything Indy has to offer outdoors this weekend:
Shred-it Day – This community event is sponsored by Crime Stoppers, and takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 26. For just $5 per shredding box, you dispose of old records, paperwork, and clutter that you no longer want. The little bit of money you spend will go toward the Crime Stoppers Reward fund to keep the community safe. The following five locations are participating so that all sides of town have a chance to enjoy Shred-it Day:
- WTHR Channel 13 Studios (1000 N. Meridian Street)
- Greenwood Park Mall (1251 US Highway 31 N.)
- Cumberland Police Headquarters (11501 E. Washington Street)
- Speedway Police Headquarters (1410 N. Lynhurst Drive)
- Carmel High School Stadium (2450 E. 136th Street)
Health Fair and Cookout at Georgetown Market – From 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 26, you can spring into wellness while also enjoying a cookout. Experts will be on hand to offer FREE health checks ranging from functional neurology assessments to posture analysis. Meanwhile, the cook-out will consist of delicious meals like buffalo burgers (or vegan burgers) and Smoking Goose sausage. The plates come with slaw and chips and cost only $2.99. You can also take in a live juicing demonstration by Rick Monteith and Carrie Martin.
Recycling at the Zoo – Twice each year, the Indianapolis Zoo hold a mass recycling event. The spring edition is both Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27. You are welcome to drop off your old electronics, phone books, cardboard, and any paper you didn’t get rid of in the paper shredding event we mentioned earlier in this post. In addition to helping the environment and removing some clutter from your life, you’ll also receive a discount coupon for zoo admission. Considering how nice the weather has been outdoors lately, a trip to the zoo on the cheap is an awesome deal.
Perennial Premiere at the Museum of Art – If you have a green thumb, this is the outdoors event for you. The Madeline F. Elder Greenhouse takes center stage here with a broad selection of plants for sale. You’ll find perennials, native plants, herbs, dwarf conifers, and more. IMA horticulturists will be available to answer questions and give guided garden walks. The hours are 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 26 and noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 27.
Sun King Brewing Installation Nation – 11 artists will be transforming the ArtsPark at the Indianapolis Art Center into a temporary outdoor installation art gallery. Primary Colours is presenting the artwork of Installation Nation. Meanwhile, Sun King Brewing will provide fresh local beer to accompany the music and food. This fun outdoors event is FREE and open to all ages (though the kids won’t be drinking the local beer). The event lasts from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25 (live music beginning at 8:00 p.m.), and from noon to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 26.
