We often think of child hunger as a tragedy centered in third world countries far from here, but it’s a big problem even in a nation like ours. In America alone, 16.7 million children lived in food insecure households in 2011. Nearly 14 million children were served by Feeding America, over 3 million of which were five years old or younger. Also in 2011, 16.1 million children (around 22% of the kids in our country) lived in poverty. For more statistics like these, click here to see our source.
We don’t mention this as some sort of guilt trip for how good we all have it. The reason we are bringing it up is because September is the month of the No Kid Hungry campaign. Restaurants across the nation step up to sponsor promotions and fundraisers that will help end childhood hunger in our country. Here in Indianapolis, we know of three major chains that are participating in the No Kid Hungry campaign. Here are the details:
Joe’s Crab Shack – They will be offering guests opportunities to donate to No Kid Hungry in exchange for coupons for their next visit. For every $1 donation, guests receive a FREE kids meal. A $5 donation earns a FREE appetizer, and a $10 donation means a FREE crab bucket.
Macaroni Grill – It’s the same idea here. A $1 donation earns a guest a voucher for a FREE tiramisu with the purchase of an adult entree. A $5 donation means a FREE antipasta with purchase of an adult entree, and a $10 donation means a FREE Romano’s Classic Dish with purchase of an adult entree.
CiCi’s Pizza – This one is a bit different. CiCi’s will donate to No Kid Hungry for every 32-oz. beverage sold during the month of September, pledging a minimum of $25,000. Also, guests will be able to upload images of their 32-oz. CiCi’s cups to the CiCi’s Facebook and Instagram pages for a chance to be the featured fan of the week. CiCi’s will make $25 donations to No Kid Hungry on behalf of the fan of the week.
