Summer is quickly approaching here in Indianapolis, and we want to point out all the fun opportunities that our local libraries have in store for this summer. We know that writing about every library’s unique offerings in one post would be overwhelming and lead to information overload. Therefore, we’re highlighting a different local library every day this week to give our Cheapsters a well-rounded preview of what’s happening this summer.
Today, we’re focusing on the Greenwood Public Library (located at 310 S. Meridian Street). If you just go down the list of events, the summer months aren’t particularly different from the rest of the year, proving that the Greenwood Public Library is a blast all year long and not just while the kids are home from school. Just like in other months, teens can take part in “Nerd Proud” events, science experiments, and advisory board meetings. Adults can sign up for a wide variety of learning fun (i.e. basket weaving, calligraphy, pilates, etc.).
So, what sets summer apart? Well, two things. The first is that history buffs can stop by their Exhibit Hall during June and July to explore the Greenwood 150th Anniversary Exhibit. The second significant summer-only event is the summer reading program. There are divisions for adults, children, and teens, but all of them involving reading books (duh) and having fun while earning chances to win prizes. The rules vary slightly depending on your age group, but they involve completing reading milestones on bingo cards and earning raffle tickets. Those raffle tickets could result in prizes, which again differ depending on your age group. The summer reading program lasts through August 2.
There’s something for everyone this summer (and all year-round) at the Greenwood Public Library. In case you don’t live on the south side, however, check back tomorrow for the next installment in our Summer Library Series.
