If your kids are fans of the outdoors (or if you’d like to give them the opportunity to become fans of the outdoors), the 13th annual Kids Fishing Derby at Eagle Creek is a great option. The Eagle Creek Park Foundation is hosting this event from 8:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 7. It all takes place at Eagle Creek Park’s Coffer Dam, and it’s FREE for children aged 4-14.
The Fishing Derby takes place on one of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources designated FREE fishing days, meaning Indiana residents can fish without a license in public waters that day. All participants in the event receive a cookout-style lunch and a goody bag. In addition to the fishing, kids can enjoy entertainment courtesy of the Pacers Fan Van, McGruff the Crime Dog, and park animals from the Eagle Creek park nature centers. Live bait will be provided, though participants are asked to bring their own fishing equipment. A few fishing poles will be available for kids who can’t supply their own.
Pre-registration is required by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 5. That seems like a long time from now, but space will be limited at Eagle Creek to the first 400 participants. Plus, summer schedules fill up notoriously fast, so we recommend you sign up soon if you’re interested. You can find entry forms online if you click here. Finally, keep in mind that if severe weather hits on that Saturday, the event will be moved to Sunday June 8.
