You will almost never see us at Indianapolis On The Cheap writing a post about events in another state. We have too many deals, discounts, and freebies to focus on in our area. However, our national group Living On The Cheap has recently published a post about Thunder Over Louisville and the Kentucky Derby that we wanted to bring to your attention because, well, it isn’t a particularly far drive down to the state directly to our south. And while we engage in a mostly friendly rivalry (perhaps not so friendly in basketball) with the state of Kentucky, we have to admit that they have several big events coming up soon.
Granted, tickets for the Kentucky Derby don’t generally fall under our jurisdiction of “cheap.” Some of these tickets go for more than $1500 each, and the race lasts two minutes. Of course, you can make it into Churchill Downs for just $50 on Saturday, May 4 for the Kentucky Derby if you want to buy a general admission ticket with access to the infield, but we encourage you to look closer at the Living On the Cheap post for that. This article has lots of details about the two weeks leading up to the Derby, and plenty of FREE and fun events you can attend during that period (i.e. the Pegasus Parade, hot air balloon events, and more).
What we wanted to draw particular attention to, however, is Thunder Over Louisville. A shorter drive than the one to Churchill Downs, Thunder Over Louisville is only a two-hour drive from Indy. And if you are a fan of fireworks, this performance should be close to the top of your bucket list. It is the largest display of fireworks in all of North America, and it kicks off on Saturday, April 20. In addition to the fireworks, Thunder Over Louisville features an air show that’s rated among the Top 5 in the country.
So, if you want to kick off the Kentucky Derby Festival with a FREE show of the best fireworks you’re likely to see this year, we recommend you load up the car this weekend and make a day of it. The air show starts at 3:00 p.m. and the fireworks rumble at 9:30 p.m.
