Even if you aren’t a gamer, it’s hard to miss the signs that Gen Con has come to Indy. Known as the best four days in gaming, Gen Con is the original, longest-running, best-attended gaming convention in the world. Last year, more than 49,000 people were in downtown Indy for the fun, and there could be just as many this year. Some dress up in full costume for the occasion, while others just want to take in all the hundreds of games and artwork crammed into this four-day event.
As with any event this big in our city, Cheapsters who look closely can identify some Gen Con-related deals. While the convention begins Thursday, some of the deals associated with it start earlier. For example, Game Paradise (located at 1110 Prospect Street) is holding a huge pre-party. Stop by on Tuesday, August 12 and Wednesday, August 13 for FREE food, giveaways, and gaming with several special guests. Some of these include game designers Sean Brown, Jim Felli, Anders and Ollie Tyrland, James Earnest, Michael Keller, Mark Corsey, and Frank Dennis.
Meanwhile, Scotty’s Brewhouse is celebrating Gen Con all week with movies and gaming. You can watch Pacific Rim and the Matrix on Tuesday; Hell Boy, Man of Steel, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Dredd on Wednesday; Ghostbusters 1 and 2, the Star Wars prequel trilogy, and RoboCop on Thursday; Iron Man, The Amazing Spiderman, Thor, Iron Man 2, The Avengers, and Thor 2 on Friday; The Hobbit Parts 1 and 2, and the original Star Wars trilogy on Saturday; and the Lord of the Rings trilogy on Sunday.
Additionally, Scotty’s is giving out a different color collectible die each day Wednesday through Saturday. If you collect all four dice, you can enjoy an exclusive fifth on Sunday. Scotty’s is getting truly invested in gaming culture this week.
The Indianapolis Colts Grille is celebrating in a similar fashion. They’ll be holding a welcome night and a Thursday night dinner with Mayfair Games. They will also be showing movie marathons all week, including a Star Wars marathon on Friday. For those gamers who don’t want to leave the convention, sign up for the Colts Grille Special Gen Con food menu online. You’ll be able to pick your meal and schedule a time of pick-up so that you won’t miss much during lunch and/or dinner.
The RAM is usually a big Gen Con participant, but they’re keeping their involvement closer to the chest this year. So far, we do know they plan an Everblight Ale tapping party on Wednesday, August 13 at 7:00 p.m. We’ve also found a link to the new Privateer pins and a Blighted Bather mug:
Hang out on Georgia Street on Wednesday, where Sun King Brewing Company is celebrating the Froth of Kahn tapping party beginning at 5 pm.
As we mentioned before, Gen Con is well known for people dressing up in elaborate costumes to attend the convention. Granite City Food and Brewery recognizes this fact and is holding a costume contest at 10:00 p.m. Saturday, August 16. It’s tough to tear yourself away from the Convention Center that night if you’re attending Gen Con, but the winner will receive $200 in cash and a gift basket valued at more than $150. If you’re not into costumes, check out their special Gen Con food and drink menu they cooked up for gamers!
We will update this post with any new Gen Con deals we hear about between now and the event itself. If you’re attending the convention, have a wonderful time … oh, uh, live long and prosper.
