As of this past weekend, summer has officially begun. Summer is the time of year that we spend outdoors, enjoying the longer daylight hours. With the kids home from school, parents look for fun activities to enjoy during these months. If you’re looking for fun activities, we have a few ideas that transcend cheap and go straight to ‘FREE things to do’ this summer.
Tours:
There are many unique and historical things to see in Indianapolis, many of which constitute FREE things to do. For example, you can meet up at the South Bend Chocolate Company in the southwest quadrant of Monument Circle at 10:00 a.m. on a Friday or Saturday (as long as it isn’t raining heavily) for a FREE tour of Monument Circle. Or, if you prefer an indoor tour, you can always walk into the Statehouse on any non-holiday weekday and choose from three types of scheduled tours. For being a FREE thing to do, tours can teach us quite a bit of information.
Parks:
As far as FREE things to do, parks tend to be a no-brainer. However, you don’t always just have to stick to the park closest to your house. If you journey around Indy, you’ll find all sorts of parks. Each park runs its own special activities, many of which happen in the summer. Here are a few examples of particularly-beloved parks here in Indy:
- White River State Park
- University Park
- Sahm Park
- Garfield Park
- The Monon Trail
Museums:
Finally, museums are great places to have fun while keeping your kids’ minds engaged over summer break. Indianapolis has several museums that are always available as FREE things to do. For example, the Indianapolis Museum of Art always offers FREE admission. During the summer, however, you may be tempted to bypass the inside attractions of the Art Museum just to enjoy the stunning grounds. Alternatively, you could head for the center spot of the city, going beneath the Soldiers and Sailors Monument on Monument Circle to tour the Colonel Eli Lilly Civil War Museum. This museum is always FREE is open from Friday to Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
