For some, canning is a foreign concept similar to sewing, churning butter, or dial-up Internet. Canning is a process that may not be as necessary today as it used to be, but is still highly effective in preserving food. And in case we ever have a power-outage the magnitude of what you can see on the NBC show Revolution, it wouldn’t hurt to know a thing or two about canning.
You may be asking yourselves whether we “can” just tell you the details of this workshop. Our answer: Yes, we “can.” We just wanted to make a terrible joke first.
Anyway, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. is hosting this canning instructional workshop from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 9. Keep Indianapolis Beautiful is located at 1029 Fletcher Avenue, and the workshop costs $15 to sign up. It’s an introductory class, so you don’t have to be a canning expert going in (though you “can” if you want to, haha). You’ll learn the basics of the simplest method : water bath canning. You’ll learn which foods are best for this method and how to do it safely at home. You’ll even receive a walk-through on a complete preserves recipe.
