For the past decade, the Indianapolis Zoo has hosted the Naturally Inspired Paint Out, presented by The Great Frame Up of Indianapolis. Artists from all over the city are invited to craft works “en plein air,” meaning outdoors. From there, the works submitted go on display in the White River Gardens near the Zoo (the Schaefer Rotunda, to be specific) and are displayed through the summer before being sold off during a silent auction.
So, if you or someone you know is an artist looking to gain professional exposure, we encourage you to spread the word and sign up to participate. This year is the 11th Annual Naturally Inspired Paint Out, and participants should apply by March 11. You can click the link here for the Application Form.
Out of the applicants, 15 artists will be selected from a jury judging on creativity and integrity of work, as well as sensitivity to and understanding of the subject. If your name comes up in this selection, you’ll receive a $100 stipend to cover the costs of your materials and supplies. Not only will you enjoy great exposure and an opportunity to show off your artistic skills, but you’ll also be supporting the education and conservation goals of the Indianapolis Zoo. So, circle that March 11 deadline on your calendar and get ready for the Naturally Inspired Paint Out.
And while you’re marking the dates on your calendar, keep these dates and times in mind, too:
- The Paint Out (for the 15 selected) – 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on April 27
- The Silent Auction – 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on August 29

Does the person have to live in the city to enter? My daughter needs the exposure and would like to be included, but she now lives in Bedford, In. She did live here in Indianapolis with us. If she is eligible to enter, please let me know and I will forward her the information.
Thanking you in advance,
Mary Taber
