Guess what – Christmas is only a matter of days away. For some of you, this means a manic run to the mall to buy those last sets of gifts on your list. For others, that means continuing to turn up the volume on those Christmas songs you’ve been listening to this month. Still others will be starting to get together with friends and family near and far for holiday parties. For those of you who have any free time at all this weekend, however, here’s some entertainment you can enjoy on the cheap (or even for FREE) this weekend:
St. John’s Christkindl Village – The most festive street in downtown Indy, Georgia Street, is going for a German spin this weekend. From 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday December 19 and from noon to 9:00 p.m. Saturday December 20, you can enjoy a traditional German Christmas Market presented by St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. The festivities will include a live nativity, plenty of lights and decorations, kids activities, live music, Christmas trees and more for sale, and even some visits with Santa Claus. Admission is FREE.
The Great Rupert – Garfield Park Conservatory and Gardens is continuing its vintage movie series by showing 1950’s The Great Rupert starting at 7:00 p.m. Saturday. It costs only $5 to attend, and features the charming story of Rupert the Squirrel. When a New York family moves into a ground floor apartment where Rupert lives in the attic, the squirrel acts as the family’s guardian angel in this warm and sweet classic movie.
Superheroes at the Library – It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s… Don Miller of FamilyTime Entertainment. He’ll be presenting a fun afternoon program starting at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Wayne Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library. This family-friendly program is all about superheroes, which will appeal primarily to kids.
Carmel Ice Stadium – ‘Tis the season to go ice skating, and the Carmel Ice Stadium is decorating its facilities for Winter Wonderland. This seasonal special continues through January 1, but you can be among the first to experience these family-friendly public skating sessions when they start on Saturday December 20. The hours for the public skating are from noon to 5:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Pictures with Santa in Plainfield – Santa is going to be a busy man this weekend, as he’s also going to be making an appearance in Plainfield. Specifically, the big man will be at the Recreation and Aquatic Center (651 Vestal Road) from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday. The opportunity for kids to have photos taken with Santa is the main attraction, but there will also be cookie decorating (while supplies last), a bounce house, face painting, music, games, and fun. Plus, the entertainment is FREE.
Dads and Kids Shopping Night – For all the dads and kids out there who haven’t picked out a gift yet for Mom (don’t worry, you’re in good company), Zionsville is offering you a bail-out. Downtown Zionsville shops will be staying open late with affordable gift ideas for moms. Many of the stores will be offering deals and special treats for dads and kids. Also, Zionsville will be providing FREE horse-drawn carriages from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday December 18.
