Well, it might be appropriate to call time of death for the autumn season. It was nice while it lasted, but the cold fist of winter came pounding down on Indy this week. With highs in the 30s and lower for the next indeterminate amount of time, more and more of our weekend roundups will be sticking to indoor activities.
We know that the two biggest things on most of our Cheapsters’ agendas this weekend involve (1) staying warm and (2) watching our Colts battle the dreaded Patriots, but we hope our top six ideas for weekend fun on the cheap (and some even for FREE) will be next on your list:
Dave and Buster’s Thirsty Thursday – Thirsty Thursday isn’t a new concept at Dave and Buster’s, but there’s a new wrinkle that we wanted to make you aware of. If you wear your favorite team’s jersey on Thirsty Thursday at Dave and Buster’s and purchase any powercard during the Thursday Night Football game, you’ll receive unlimited video game play. Of course, we hope that means plenty of Colts jerseys, but it looks like any team jersey will work for this offer. Keep this one in mind not just this weekend, but as an ongoing special.
Hoosier Novels on the Big Screen – The Greenwood Public Library has probably had trouble keeping John Green books like The Fault in Our Stars in stock, given the novel’s success (boosted by the fact that it’s now a blockbuster movie). However, John Green isn’t the only Hoosier author who has seen his work make it to the big screen. At 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. November 13, you can come learn something new from Dan O’Brien at the Greenwood Public Library. He will show you film clips and fill in interesting tidbits about the rich variety of novels penned by Hoosier authors that have been made into movies over the last several decades. This fun session is offered for FREE.
Night of the Comet at the Vogue – We don’t generally consider an event like this with a cover charge for our weekend lists. However, your cover charge is only $10 for this fun evening, and all of it goes to the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence as a fundraiser. The doors open at 7:00 p.m. Friday ,November 14, and you’ll hear music from ten of Indy’s best local bands. Not to mention, the first 75 guests will receive a FREE compilation CD featuring those performing bands, which will more than make up for the cover charge. This evening promises to offer fun while benefiting a great cause.
Elegance Bridal Boutique Grand Opening – Out on the northern edge of our Indy territory, Elegance Bridal Boutique will be hosting a Grand Opening party this weekend. They are located at 4 E. Main Street in Pittsboro, and the event lasts from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday. If you like the sound of bridal hair styles, hand and foot massages, bridal nail designs, and fresh and fragrant floral designs by the ladies at Flowers & Treasures, you won’t want to miss this FREE event. If you’re on the fence, keep in mind that there will be cake pops and someone will be winning a FREE wedding dress. “I do” want to see you there.
Collector’s Closet Event – The Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation is holding a Collector’s Closet event at its location on 6500 N. Meridian from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, November 15. The Temple Sisterhood is hosting a sale of designer handbags, jewelry, furs, and other boutique items in order to raise money for their social justice and educational projects. Admission is FREE to this fun shopping experience.
Flat 12 Arcade Play – Craft beer is what Flat 12 Bierwerks does best, but an awesome arcade experience might just be second best. You can join them in the taproom Sunday for a day of craft beer and FREE arcade play courtesy of Tappers Arcade Bar. If you attend, be ready to play the classic arcade games like Space Invaders, Asteroids, Ms. Pacman, NBA Jam, NFL Blitz, and more. There will even be a Bomberman Tournament you can join on the big screen.
